Foggy Bottom’s local governing body gave Tonic restaurant the go-ahead last week to construct another outdoor patio and add an awning above its current sidewalk cafe.
The Foggy Bottom and West End Advisory Neighborhood Commission also supported the bar’s application to serve alcoholic drinks in the new space.
“I’ve appreciated this particular restaurant and the way it’s behaved over the years,” commissioner and alumnus Asher Corson said. He said the four-year-old bar and restaurant has livened up the corner of 21st and G streets.
Co-owner Greg Nicholas said the eatery reached an agreement with GW to leave the patio open during non-service hours so students could sit at the the tables in warm weather. His partner, Jeremy Pollock, added the outdoor dining area would not play music – a concern of Peter Sacco, a student who was elected to the ANC last November.
